Any new initiative which aims to further education and support for the benefits of renewable energy is welcomed.  OneMillionLights which is a non-profit organisation providing solar lighting to rural communities globally is aiming to reach out to 1,000,000 students with the help of the SunPower Foundation.

The OneMillionStudents program aims to reach thousands of schoolchildren  internationally to educate,  inspire and motivate them to make smart power choices and to grow-up more environmentally conscious.

Teachers and students can sign up for lesson plans and to take part and get involved to help light up communities around the world.

One Million Lights has a mission of supporting awareness of solar lighting as a healthy alternative for energy around the globe and does this through the promotion of the success stories of partner projects using solar energy around the world.

It is a stark reality that an estimated 1.3 billion people across the globe do not enjoy the safe and reliable lighting after sunset that many of us take for granted. Solar powered lighting and energy projects help to extend education and commerce for many and produce positive health benefits by reducing the reliance of dangerous kerosene lamps.

The importance of heat pumps can’t be undermined as they transfer heat energy from an object which is at a lower temperature to that which is at a relatively higher temperature. This is in contrast to the natural flow of thermal energy which flows vice versa. This mechanism of heat pumps is used in air-conditioners and refrigerators for cooling but they can also be utilized for heating purposes since they are endowed with the ability to either bring heat energy into an enclosed space or pump it out.

Solar panels, as we know are used for electricity generation. When heat pumps are integrated with these solar panels, their utility increases since they both complement each other. The benefits brought to households are also enormous. Their combination results in solar water heating panels which can be used for heating water for residential as well as commercial purposes. Both,  air source heat pumps which take their heat from the air and ground source heat pumps which take their heat from the ground and water provide central heating for households. They can respectively be combined with solar panels to increase their effectiveness and usefulness for domestic purposes because then, these heat pumps are converted into a renewable and inexhaustible source of thermal energy.

This integrated system of heat pumps and solar panels offers multifarious advantages to residences. Perhaps, the greatest edge that it lends to households is the low rates that are a direct consequence of its installation. The government offers attractive tariff and electricity rates which are not just restricted to heat pumps but instead, to the entire household. This will also lead to increased savings and a drastic reduction in the electricity bill. Moreover, since they are not dependent on fossil fuels for their energy, any change in energy prices will not affect your electricity bill. Besides, these heat pumps are also eco-friendly and offer a renewable supply of energy because they do not emit any greenhouse gases and use a minimal amount of energy. Coupled with the latest technology to provide end-user comfort and with increased safety due to an absence of any danger related to explosions, fires or carbon monoxide poisoning, heat pumps along with solar panels are an ideal solution for your household’s electricity needs.

Solar cell band gap and background to n and p type doping

February 28, 2011 Blog

One of the key things around the transfer of light energy through photons into electrical energy in the solar cell is around the concept of a band gap. In these bands the highest occupied band is known as the valence band which contains valence electrons. The lowest un-occupied band is known as the conduction band. [...]
